Spring 2025 Newsletter

Greeting

From Shaku Kojyu:
It is a beautiful spring at Daishu-in West. I hope this finds you well.
The temple has sesshins every month that are open to all. Please check the calendar on the website and contact us to schedule a stay.
There is also one period online sit at 6:30am Tuesday through Saturday if you would like to join us.
Outside of sesshin, we are always available for tea and a short tour of the temple. If you would like to come please let me know in advance and we will schedule a visit. First time visitors are also welcome so please pass the invitation along to anyone who may be interested.
Our friend Rie in Kyoto and I have finished the subtitles of a second NHK interview with Morinaga Soko Roshi, "Mother's Love / Buddha Heart." You can watch it here on YouTube.
Last year Holly Sweet had the idea of producing tea bowls as a fundraiser. Camille Penny has made and donated many matcha bowls to the temple to. If you are interested in a matcha-wan please mention it during your visit.
Thank you for your continued efforts, we look forward to seeing you at Daishu-in West.

禅語

Zen Phrase

[一切種智] "Issai-shuchi"
This phrase is used by Morinaga Soko Roshi in the NHK "Bojyo/Bushin" interview to describe the original wisdom and strength we all possess.
In the Lotus Sutra the Buddha says,
"Sariputra, all the Buddhas of the past have expounded all the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings through countless expedient means, causes and conditions, parables and words. This Dharma is all for the sake of the One Buddha Vehicle. All these sentient beings hear the Dharma from all the Buddhas and eventually attain Issai-shuchi (一切種智)."
"Issai-shuchi" could literally be translated as "the entirety of seed wisdom." Conventionally we can say "seed wisdom" or "complete wisdom."
Nothing informs the seed on how to grow and become a tree. A maple seed is naturally a maple, an oak acorn is naturally an oak. It is the seed itself which naturally sprouts, puts forth leaves, blossoms and produces fruit.
In this same way, we all originally are endowed within ourselves the fundamental wisdom to meet each moment and situation.
